How did FreedemBass start?
Living Stone. FreedemBass Started with A WOMP! and was Followed by a boom and then a chika chika. We did a trial run in December with Taal Mala, and it went well off and thus we were offered a monthly spot on the second Sunday of the Month.
What do you think of previous turnouts? and what do you expect this time?
L. I am so stoked with the past turnouts. People love Dubstep in Montreal so much they are willing to come out on a Sunday night in droves. My expectations for upcoming FreedemBass' are ... well, we've received such great response I can only hope the momentum of the night continues and overflows as the summer approaches.
What can we expect this time?
L. Same old same old, you know BOOM WOMP STOMPING, Hopefully a Jumping crowd with our special guest this month Benga ... oh wait! I meant to say Local Montreal Heavy-weight Kiffa. The Dig.iT.aL boys are as usual preparing something special for the night. We aim to please, and won't rest until the crowd is well Basseded.
What are some of your thoughts on the Montreal dubstep scene?L. The local Montreal dubstep scene is great! It's growing all the time and gaining momentum and notoriety locally and globally. Dubstep is so unique and for me is the real culmination of so many different styles and genres of music. It's really amazing!.
Guestlist. One of the things I like most about dubstep are the people who are into it. Montreal's got a really nice community of heads who keep the scene alive. And their numbers seem to be growing.
How did you first get into dubstep?
L. The first time I heard dubstep I was chilling on a deck in the Kootnay's in British Columbia. It was a Luke Envoy track and I sat there trying to figure out what the hell was going on! It slowly grew on me and in the last 2 years it has come to dominate my music collection. Apparently I'm a dubstep junky and can't get enough.
G. I actually can't remember how it started. I've been into electronic music in general for a long time, though. The first few times I heard dubstep I liked it, but it took a while to convince me it was amazing. I think it was only last summer that I was convinced for sure, when I heard Skream play the Ewok Village. The bass was so powerful my eyeballs were vibrating.
What kind of music background do you have?
L. I grew up playing a little bit of piano, guitar, and percussion. I also performed in multiple choirs in Junior high and High school. When I moved to Montreal five years ago I began trying my hand at electronic music production with Reason, the rest as they say is cheps! or history depending on your group of friends.
G. I played the piano when I was younger, and have been a drummer for about ten years. I've been more or less obsessed with music for as long as I can remember.
Do you listen to anything else besides dubstep?
L. Good music, anything that catches me, inspires me. The range goes from acoustic to electronic, idm, breaks, glitch, hip hop, it doesn't stop there. I love all music that moves me.
G. I like fucked up shit. Cut-up music, noise, black metal, whatever. I've been learning to appreciate breakcore lately, and I got tickets to see Ornette Coleman this summer.
What are your favourite tunes at the moment? L. Well favorite tune singular is not possible. I am really into Cays Crays Digital Mystikz remix right now, and Benga's Better, also Flying Lotus' Beginners Falafel. So many good tracks, those are just a few.
G. Jakes put out a track called Warface which I quite enjoy. That guy is ridiculous. Taal Mala's been making all kinds of new stuff too. You should probably
visit his mypsace page or something.
Any shoutouts?
L. To the worst dj I've every heard but one of the best performers out there who gets whip lash every show, my Man RubberMuffin, Also DjMCPrhyme and Dj Nemo from thr rootsellers, also my homie OMie'1 BC, Bassnectar, SubSwara, Spoonbill, Apocalyptica Presents (who Organize the FreedemBass Nights) And Buzz Lightyear for his undeniably universal slogan: "To infinity and beyond".
G. Big ups to everybody who keeps coming out on Frickin' Sundays!
